With the rate that technology is evolving nowadays, it’s quite easy to be left behind in the current market of electronic products. I experienced this myself when I decided to buy a cell phone. My friend told me that I would be better off if I spend more money for a Bluetooth enabled cell phone instead of the generic model that I was planning to buy.

I couldn’t decide which model I would purchase because I had no idea how different Bluetooth enabled cell phones are from the generic models. A friendly salesclerk at the mall patiently explained to me why they were so special. I found out that the features on a blue tooth enable cell phones would allow me to do a variety of things that would be impossible with standard mobile phones.

Bluetooth enabled cell phones makes it possible to wirelessly transfer e-mails, contact information, and other basic content to someone who have a similar device. If you have special car kit you, can even make and receive hands-free, wireless calls while driving. Doing these this manually with a standard cell phone would be dangerous. Many recent car models already come with the necessary equipment to accommodate blue tooth enabled cell phones and more automobile companies are planning to follow the trend in the following years.

You might think that with these state of the art features, Bluetooth enabled cell phones would be considerably more expensive than the older generic models. If you’re not after very high-end models, you can find that they are actually quite affordable. With the number of cell-phone manufacturer competing for customers, you can be sure that prices of blue tooth enabled cell phones will remain reasonable. Since they are manufactured by world-class companies like Motorola, Sony, and Nokia you also can be sure of getting a high quality product.

Don’t be left behind. You don’t know what you’re missing if you don’t avail of the exciting features that affordable and user-friendly blue tooth enabled cell phones can offer.

I remember back in the mid 90s when I was “in between” jobs, in debt and broke. My “in between” job status at that time for a period of about one year was a car salesman. Now, I know what your thinking. Why? My answer…..hmmmmmmmm. Anyhow, it happened and as it turned out, it became quite a learning experience. What I experienced as a car salesman in my very brief career by choice, was rather disturbing. This is by no means an article on selling cars. This is what salesmanship is and is not.

So I was in the car business, and was virtually taught the wrong way to be a salesman or salesperson. When it comes to shopping for a car, overall it becomes somewhat a rather unpleasant experience for all parties involved. Here is a typical day in the car business: You wake up in the morning to put on the shirt and tie for the day in the middle of July in Florida. Its about one hundred degrees with humidity. You get in the car and drive to work asking yourself, why……why….. because you know there is going to be an unpleasant experience waiting somewhere around the corner. You arrive at work and find yourself getting ready for the morning “meeting abuse” which always ends up that we are terrible salesman and we need to sell cars! Really? We need to sell cars? Ok. So, after the meeting we all leave the room with bruises and bumps and we are ready to practice the art of being a salesman.

For those of you who do not know, when a person arrives on the lot to car shop, he is referred to as an “up” in the car business. Usually, all of the salespeople are lined up outside like vultures waiting for an “up” so we can swoop in and turn on the really lame salesman charm. Now, at this point, you meet the customer. “Hi, my name is Dave” (smile). Then, the customer replies, “Were just looking”. Of course they are just looking. Not by the time I get through with you. By the time we get through with you, you might be running out the door and never look back.

So, Im following the “We are just looking” people around the lot because if I don’t, I will get yelled at by the powers that be. The potential customers that I am with do not want me near them at all at this point. And with good reason. Car shopping and or buying is the equivalent of going to the dentist. It can be a painful experience.

Now I am asking the nice folks on the lot all types of questions, trying to create trust and learning something about them that will help me sell to them. This is an ok method for the car business, because this is the way it has been taught. Now the problem from the “get go”, is that most customers back then were the old school. To them, car buying was rolling up your sleeves and get ready to do battle. That’s really not the way I want to make a living, but that’s what it was.

So, what do you really have from this? You have uninformed people at all angles. First of all, customers come onto the lot thinking their “trade-in” is worth a fortune. And to there surprise, it’s not. They did not do their own research on their “trade-in”. Second, they don’t know what they want. They want to spend no money on a car they can not afford to begin with. Again, they did not do their research.

Now, another problem. As a salesman, if you are going to make it in the business of selling anything, you have to rise above everyone else and figure out a strategy that is going to attract people to you automatically without being annoying and pushy from the start. I noticed that most of the salesman on the lot were not doing anything but waiting for something to happen, and unfortunately I was one of them. Because I didn’t know either.

Now, when I could not close someone, here comes the sales manager thinking he’s the be all to end all and that the “hammer them” into the car technique is going to work. You see the philosophy behind most selling in the car business, as an example ,is if they leave here without buying from us, they will never buy from us.Well, maybe your right. But let’s not forget. In the world of sales, let the salespeople do their job by giving there potential customers all of the information they need to make a well informed decision. And if they don’t buy today, let them remember you and your salesmanship and whatever great strategy you came up with for them to make the buying process easier. Believe me, after they have been everywhere else, they will remember you.The “in your face” approach does not work anymore.

I found myself having to catch a bus last week, the second week of the children’s school summer holiday. I was instructed to take my son to his Grandma’s house and with my wife having the car it left me with no choice but to do something that I hadn’t done for over twenty years - take the bus.

The 188 from Weymouth to Poole. I was to get on from the stop at the end of my road which wasn’t too far away from the town but a little too far to walk.

My son and I reached the stop ten minutes before aforementioned bus was due. Forty minutes later it still hadn’t turned up so I got on the number 92 which stated, Poole. On we jumped - I asked if he went all the way to Poole. No, he said, I don’t. Well it says “Poole” on the destination board, I stated. It says India on the tyres, he replied, but I’m buggered if I’m going there (Okay, the old ones are the best) - yes, of course I’m going to Poole. ?1.35 for you, half fare for the boy.

It was just 14 pence the last time I went on a bus, shows how I’d lost touch.

I think I started to enjoy the ride more than my seven year old son, who always got excited during the odd bus trip, especially if it was an open top bus and he would be ‘allowed upstairs’.

Then my enjoyment started to fade as we had to actually stop to let some people get on. After using my own transport for so many years this was a nuisance. They fumbled with their change and took ages to sort out a ticket. The time, the time, what are they doing?

Off we went, when a kind driver eventually let us pull out. Ah yes the memories of busses was coming back to me.

I read the same few adverts over a few times and moved from a draughty vent. I couldn’t help but listen to a stupid conversation that some teenage girls were having in front of my new seat. Boyfriends, who’d have them, eh?

My boy was grinning from ear to ear, obviously enjoying seeing something from the bus window, everything seemed to please him but here was I getting totally fed up with the slow, noisy and frustrating bus ride into, Poole. Going to Grandma’s in the car took seven minutes but here on the bus, only half way there, had taken an hour already.

We stopped at a bus lay by but there weren’t any passengers to pick up, so why stop? Ah, yes, I remember now - the driver has to ‘do his books’. He clicked a number of coins from his cash dispenser and wrote a few notes in his book, messed about with some tickets and timetables and put the engine in gear. Not wanting to hurry, he wasn’t fussed that nobody would let him pull out onto the highway again, choosing to wait instead until there was a huge gap in the traffic before he even attempted to pull away.

Sadly, in Poole, we have a thing called a lifting bridge. It is for the boats in the harbour. The main road in and out of Poole is built over, Poole harbour, and the road has to lift up in order for shipping to go through to the other side of the lifting bridge. Now the bridge lifts up at certain times - called the ‘rush hour’ and ‘when anyone’s in a hurry to get to Poole’. It is the biggest black mark in the history of Poole. All traffic comes to a stand still once the lifting bridge is up and allowing the boats to sail through.

Judging by the queue of traffic that the bus joined after we left the last stop, we had hit such a time. Off goes the engine and silence falls on the neighbourhood - it’s quite eerie really and also bloody annoying.

Anyway, after around an hour (fifteen minutes actually but it felt longer) off we went again, very, very slowly as the bridge isn’t very wide and certain vehicles can only go through single file, meaning one driver has to wait for the other. If we are lucky it won’t go up again before we get our chance to cross to the other side.

It didn’t and the bus station, our destination, was getting nearer. But wait, the driver was turning off the main road and going a different way than I expected.

Oh yes, another ‘bus thing’, it may have to pick up passengers from that bus stop about two miles up that odd road that nobody ever goes along but ‘just in case’, buses must go that way. Nobody was at the stop - the driver waited there anyway (just to annoy people like me, of course) and then off we went again -.”Look daddy, a train is at the station”, be quiet, I replied.

The queue into the bus station was long as cars were in the bus lane, cars who’s drivers didn’t realise that the lane for the multi-storey car park was the other lane, not this one, this one was for buses.

At last we were at the bus station and parked up. Now, had we have caught the 188, or rather had it turned up, we would have been dropped outside of Grandma’s but, as this was the 92, it took us to the station and we had to catch another bus to go to a road near Grandma’s.

Stand by for Mr. Grumpy. Yes the 101 to Bournemouth was late. If a driver is late he is very grumpy and snaps at all passengers along the way - that’s if he actually stops to pick them up. Many ‘would be’ passengers are left stranded with their hand sticking out to stop the bus only to see it sail on by…in Poole that means you’ve got a late, grumpy driver.

After queuing for a while I stated where I’d like to go. Seventy two pence, the driver snapped. Why the odd two?, I thought. Anyway I thought it would be good to give him the correct change as they always seem to not be able to change a fifty pence coin if my memory served me correctly, so to cheer him up I placed some coins on his counter and looked in my pockets for the odd two pence coin. He tutted and groaned and looked at his watch in annoyance followed by a look over my shoulder at the queue. He tore off my ticket and told me that I should tear my own ticket off. I said, “well, the other driver tore it off for me”, but he didn’t seem to care. This was all new to me.

My son was getting fed up by now - all his playtime would be used up on the bus trips. Past the first two stops without stopping (I told you, didn’t I?) and picking up a few other passengers then on to our stop.

Off we jumped and walked the rest of the way to Grandma’s. Grandma was pleased to see us. My boy played with some toys and then we were invited to stay to tea. Mummy came to Grandma’s from work and we all had a lovely time…apart from the bus trip. I am having the car next week, no, I said, I AM having the car next week!

Two months after I got married, I got pregnant. Before I got pregnant I weighed a healthy 150 pounds, and believe me, when I realized I was pregnant I was very worried that my body was going to explode, and it did. But here is a story about how weight loss after pregnancy is possible, but this particular way is not recommended.

How I Gained the Weight

Being newly married and being newly pregnant were two things that led me to eat. I ate and ate and ate and ate. Before the first trimester was over I weighed 175 pounds. The ice cream tasted very good, but the numbers on the scale made me sick to my stomach. By the time the second trimester rolled around, I was sure that if I lay down on the ground I could roll around too.

I listened to the OB/GYN when he said that I should take better care of myself during the pregnancy for myself and the baby’s sake, but food was comforting me in a time of emotional upheaval.

By the third trimester I had gained 40 pounds. In my own defense I must say that not all of that was me. The baby and all that fluid added to the overall bulkiness of my body.

How I Lost the Weight

Is weight loss after pregnancy possible? Any woman who has given birth to a 10 pound baby can tell you that; yes, weight loss after pregnancy is possible. Not that I gave birth to a 10 pound baby, it just felt like I did.

On June 6th 2002, I gave birth to my 7 pound bundle o’ joy, and was promptly rushed into surgery. No, I didn’t hemorrhage or anything seriously dangerous like that, I just needed to have my gallbladder removed.

During my pregnancy, when I was packing away all the fatty, greasy foods, my gallbladder was slowly dying inside me. When I went into labor, my gallbladder decided it was its time to go.

After surgery, I was restricted to bed rest, cable TV, and fluids only. That meant that I literally was not allowed to chew anything. To make matters worse, I had to hang around the hospital room for 10 days so that they could monitor me and the baby for harmful side effects. You bet your sweet bottom that weight loss after pregnancy is possible.

When I was finally released from the hospital and allowed to take my baby home, I weighed a whopping 150 pounds. That’s right I went back to my pre-pregnancy weight without even trying.

Weight loss after pregnancy wasn’t so hard. The most important thing to remember is to eat healthily, and to try and get in as much physical activity as possible. However, remember that you should consult with a physician before starting any form of physical activity, especially after you have just given birth to a child.

Although all the agony and pain associated with the gallbladder ordeal has long passed, that memory of the post-pregnancy weight is still fresh in my mind. We are expecting another baby. Maybe this time I can lose a leg in a car accident. That would be a very gruesome- but quick way, of attaining weight loss after pregnancy.

As I passed through my living room on a warm summer day, I noticed a bumblebee buzzing against a window pane. Because I am telepathic with animals, I immediately began to speak with the bee. I said “hello” in my usual way, and told the bee that I wouldn’t harm it. What I felt was anger, fear, and frustration mixed together.

I spoke aloud, then, hoping to get the bee’s attention. “I know you want to be outside. There is no food for you here. I will help you back outside when you are calmer.” I left the room.

A short while later, I came back and found the bee sitting on the floor in the middle of the room, silent and still. I spoke to it again. “I am placing this plastic container on the floor next to you.” I set down a clean, empty container about 8 inches away. “If you want to go outside, climb into the container, and I will take you out.” I left the room.

Fifteen minutes later I found that the bumblebee had climbed into the container and was waiting for me. I told the bee that I would lift and carry the container as gently as I could and would place it outside. I asked the bee to trust me to do this and to stay inside the container until we were out of doors.

Slowly and very carefully I lifted the container. When I opened my front door, before I could even step onto the stoop, the bee flew off. I heard a small voice, as if from a distance, say, “Thank you.”

Every form of life on this planet is sacred. When we recognize this and behave as if it were true, we reap the benefits of our belief. Two experiences with yellow jackets, a type of hornet that lives in the ground, were powerful lessons.

On the first occasion, I was planning to transplant some day lilies. I called on the Overlighting Deva (nature spirit) responsible for my property and also the one responsible for the lilies. I asked permission to mow the grass in the area where I wanted to plant the flowers and was told to go ahead. My mower is a walking one, and the section of grass I need to cut was very small. I went up and back several times over an area about 4 feet by 6 feet. Then I put the mower away.

Upon returning to the patch, I noticed an insect flying upward and away. A second insect passed it going in the opposite direction, down towards the ground. I stopped moving and watched. A second pair of insects flew past each other in the same pattern. They looked like yellow jackets.

From my childhood, I knew that yellow jackets do not like their nest disturbed and are very sensitive to vibration. An uncle of mine, who knew little of country life, had once offered to mow our lawn. Without realizing it, he had moved over a yellow jacket nest and was swarmed.

I looked around cautiously to see where these hornets were landing. There was a small hole in the ground right where I had mowed. The yellow jackets ignored my presence entirely. I decided to speak with them.

“I hope I haven’t disturbed your nest,” I began. “I am sorry if the mowing bothered you in any way. I was going to plant flowers here, but now, in respect for you home, I will not dig up the ground. However, please realize that you have built your home in an inconvenient spot. In the fall, I will need to rake up the leaves here. I will honor your space, but please do not renew your nest here next year.” I was carefully not to disturb the nest for the rest of that summer and fall, and I had no trouble with these insects.

The following autumn, in October, when it was quite cool and the flowers in my large bed had all died, I went out to cut the dead leaves and stalks from the irises, day lilies, and peonies. It was a cool day, and I wasn’t thinking about insects. I just assumed everyone would be gone by this time of year.

Much to my surprise, I disturbed a nest of yellow jackets in the middle of the flower bed. I had not bothered asking permission to work in the flower bed. I might even have stepped right on their nest. As soon as I saw them flying around, I ran into the garage. One determined yellow jacket followed me all the way in and stung me. The insect reminded me that I had told them not to build a nest in the lawn. I had not specified that the flower bed was off limits as well. In addition, I had not asked permission to work in that area.

The sting had hurt. The message was clear. When we are disrespectful to beings whose form is smaller than our own, we show lack of respect for all Life. The next time you encounter an insect, stinging or biting or not, think of it as an opportunity for you to show respect and appreciation. Each form contributes to life on Planet Earth. If there are too many holes in the Web of Life, it will fail entirely and humanity will disappear. Have you honored an insect today?

Choosing the right permanent heater for your garage or small shop can be a daunting task, given the fact that there are so many options now available. So How do I choose just the right garage heater for my space? To help narrow down the choices, ask yourself the following questions.

1) Do I have a gas line available or easily accessible? What about adequate gas pressure?

2) If there is no gas, do I have 240V electrical power available or easily accessible?

3) What are the energy costs of gas versus electric in my area?

4) Do I want forced air or radiant?

5) Is my garage insulated?

6) What is the ceiling height?

7) Is there adequate clearance at the ceiling or on the wall to mount the heater?

 What is my budget?

9) How big is my garage?

10) Will the heater I choose require installation by a heating professional or can I do it myself?

11) Will I set the thermostat to keep the garage comfortable 24/7 or will I use the heater for only short periods?

First, if no gas line available or there is no practical way to get gas to the garage space, your selection process just became a lot easier. That’s because your only choice is an electric heater and there are only a few good options. There are several electric heater manufacturers to choose from including Chromalox, Qmark and Fostoria (TPI). These brands offer reliable forced air models suitable for residential and commercial heating. These eletcric space heaters are normally suspended from the ceiling or side wall with optional mounting brackets.

Most two or three car garages require between 25,000 and 35,000 BTU’s. An electric heater with a rating of 10.0 KW is about right (Note: to convert watts into BTU’s, multiply the total watts - in this case 10,000 watts, by 3.413). Remember, electric heaters draw a lot of amps and usally require a dedicated circuit from the electrical panel. Older, smaller homes sometimes have panels that are too small to expand and are unable to accomodate the power requirements of a high amp heater. Check with your electrician to help determine if your panel is adequate. A panel upgrade may be necessary.

In most areas of the united states, the cost of electricity is higher than the cost of gas. Even so, electric heaters do offer advantages. First, Electric heaters require no flue. If you are concerned about running a new flue through your roof or side wall, an electric heater suspended from the wall or ceiling may be the answer. Second, electric heaters are quieter than gas forced air heaters and produce little vibration. A common concern with forced air is that they are noisier and can transfer vibration through the structure of the house.

Gas forced air heaters do require 120V power, in addition to the gas line, yet the electrical draw is much, much less than with an all electric heater. What about energy consumption? Costs of gas verus electric varies all across North America. Your local utilities can help you figure out cost differences. That said, natural gas heaters have always been much cheaper to operate. Propane fired heaters can cost a bit more to run.

If a gas heater is what you’re after, you have a bunch of options. Forced air heaters, or “unit” heaters, are very common. They heat up quickly and are generally more energy efficient than electric unit heaters (comparing BTU for BTU). Choose from brands such as Enerco, Modine and Reznor.

For gas radiant heat, Enerco and Superior Radiant are two excellent brands that offer residential approved gas infra-red radiant tube heaters. Unlike forced air heaters, radiant tube heaters offer the benefit of increased creature comfort, a lot less noise and higher energy efficiency. They are a bit more expensive initially, but they can pay themselves back in a very short time. For the budget minded, Enerco offers the HeatStar H25N (Nat. Gas) or H22L (LP Gas) vent free high intensity infra-red heater. This heater is designed to heat 550 sq. feet or more, depending on insulation. It comes with wall mounting bracket, thermostat and thermostat wire and operates on a millivolt control, so it requires no electricty. Just hang the heater, connect the thermostat, run the gas line and you’re done. Total installation cost can be as little as $500.00. The H25N/H22L is one of the most popular garage heaters in North America.

Other options for heating the garage include wall mounted infra-red radiant and forced air heaters. For options, consider Rinnai, a manufacturer of residential vent free radiant heaters, forced air vent free heaters and vented wall heaters. While designed primarily for the dwelling space of the home, these heaters are excellent for garages, small shops, greenhouses, out butildings, cabins and more. When installed in garages, we recommend mounting them at least 2 feet off the floor, which should meet or exceed local codes in most areas of the U.S.

As for heater sizing, keep in mind that it can cost 80 to 90 percent more to heat an uninsulated garage compared to one that is well insulated. If you intend on maintaing a comfortable termperature inside the garage during the cold months, insulating is a must. Some homeowners may simply want to take the chill off when tooling around for short periods of time near a workbench or other spat within the garage. In such cases, insulation is not as critical. If insulation is poor, we recommend choosing a heater that is not forced air. In other words, choose an infra-red radiant heater, which produces no drafts and standing beneath it feels just like standing in the sun.

Whatever you do, DO NOT skiimp on safety. The above mentioned heaters are designed to mount safely from the ceiling or high up on the wall. Many homeowners choose to use portable propane or kerosene heaters located at the floor level to heat their garages. These heaters are unsafe around children and pets. In addition, gasoline and other flammables stored at ground level could be easily ignited in the presence of a spill. Spending a few dollars more for a permanent heater that is high and out of reach is worth that extra cost. Always use a residential garage approved heating appliance, especially for attached garages. Check local codes and use a qualified licensed heating professional for installation. Doing it the right way will add value to your home and give you peace of mind.

There are many factors at play to determine the best time to purchase a vehicle, whether new or used. These factors involve local, national, and local/national events that occur on a regular and irregular basis. Having said that, one would have to master the knowledge of economic and business trade cycles, and then attempt to apply that information to a specific vehicle within your specific purchase arena.

The real way to purchase a vehicle (and you can do this 365 days and nights a year) is by doing your homework and being prepared to buy rather than being sold. Is that possible? Absolutely, and by investing a few hours of time you will save hundreds, even thousands of dollars, and you will be empowered and you will know what you are doing.

There exists on the internet every tool you will ever need to make an intelligent vehicle purchase. There are sources that combine all the information that you will ever need in a simple and straightforward format that is easy to follow and simple to navigate. www.thebestdealofyourlife.com is as good as it gets, and supplies you with all the needed site information with links, simple fill in the blank forms, and a complete guide to take you through the buying/selling/trading process step by step.

The key to success in anything we do is knowledge, preparation, and application. Want to be a surgeon? K. P. A. Want to be a lawyer? K. P. A. Want to be an accountant? K. P. A. Regardless of what we do, buy a car, build a house, buy a lawnmower or bake a cake, what is required? Knowledge, preparation, and application.

I continually answer questions on a regular basis about making a car deal. How? What to do? When? Where do I get the information I need? What is this? What is that? And after having assisted thousands of customers in their purchases it is easy to understand why those questions are asked.

The car people purposely keep their customers in the dark as to the information they need to make a “good” deal, and always have. Now that the information is readily available (although there are very few places where one can go and get most of what they need, and only a handful where they can get everything they need) it is still difficult for the buyer to put it all together in an understandable and easily workable format that actually works in their favor.

So, what does one need to get a “good deal”, and what does it take to get a “great deal”? Knowledge. Preparation. Application. And I would add the willingness of one to actually invest the effort to get a good deal which requires doing their homework BEFORE visiting the car store. Everything is there, the difficult part is finding the information in one place, and information that actually works, is consumer friendly and simple to apply.

Six Ways to Use the Internet to Improve Your New & Used-Vehicle Shopping Experience to Buy or Lease;

With so much content and information available online today, the Internet is making it easier than ever for prospective buyers to shop for a used vehicle. The following tips may be helpful for shoppers in the market for a used vehicle and may help improve satisfaction with their used-vehicle purchase experience.

1. Visit a variety of Web sites. With an abundance of information available online for used-vehicle shoppers, it’s helpful to know where to find what you’re looking for. Independent sites are good places to find intuitive search tools that match shoppers with the right vehicle for their needs, as well as pricing and reliability information. Dealerships often maintain sites that provide their current vehicle inventories, while many manufacturer sites allow shoppers to search for certified pre-owned vehicles in their area.

2. Search for comparative used-vehicle pricing. The development of Web sites such as Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com), AutoTrader.com and Edmunds.com have made searching for used-vehicle pricing information easy. Using these sites to compare prices will give shoppers a general idea of their desired vehicle’s price range without leaving the comfort of their homes.

3. Consider online classified ads. Online classified ads sites such as AutoTrader.com and cars.com are a competitive and convenient tool to give shoppers more options when considering a used vehicle. These sites allow sellers to post used-vehicle listings along with several pictures that can be viewed easily by shoppers, based on their preferred zip code.

4. Purchase or ask for a Vehicle History Report. Vehicle History Reports (VHRs) are an inexpensive way to check the track record of any used vehicle. According to the 2006 Used Autoshopper.com Study, nearly one-third (32%) of automotive Internet users receive a free vehicle history report from the seller. If your dealer or private seller does not offer a VHR free of charge, one can be purchased online through sites such as CARFAX.com and AutoCheck.com.

5. Search for financing and compare interest rates online. When shoppers have financing arranged ahead of time, it often gives them greater negotiating power when dealing with the seller. On most sites, applying for financing is fairly easy, and the interest rates offered by many online lenders are comparable to or possibly better than those offered by dealers.

J.D. Power and Associates 2006 Used Autoshopper.com

6. Go to www.thebestdealofyourlife.com, read the first page and discover the truth, learn specific facts you need to make your best deal and check out the link page (button at the bottom of the page).

If you are looking for fine Italian wine and food, consider the Trentino-Alto Adige region of northern Italy. You may find a bargain, and I hope that you’ll have fun on this fact-filled wine education tour.

Trentino-Alto Adige is located in the center of Italy’s northern border. It touches both Switzerland and Austria. Among its tourist attractions are the Dolomite mountains, called “the most beautiful work of architecture even seen” by the famous architect Le Corbusier, glacier lakes, and Alpine forests. In fact the region is composed of two parts, Trentino in the south and Alto Adige in the north. Alto Adige belonged to the Austro-Hungarian Empire for centuries, where it was known as S?dtirol. Like many other parts of Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige was often invaded. Unlike most other parts of Italy, this area is officially bilingual; a sizable portion of its population about 925 thousand is German speaking.

Trentino-Alto Adige has plentiful forests, and the hillsides are covered with fruit trees. This is Italy’s major apple-producing region. Only about 15% of the land can be cultivated. Agricultural products include corn, wheat, oats, barley, and rye. In addition to beef and dairy cattle, mining and manufacturing are prevalent.

Trento is the administrative center of Trentino and Bolzano is the administrative center of Alto Adige. Both are tourist towns. Trentino was the site of the Council of Trent lasting almost twenty years in the middle of the 16th Century with a major impact on the Catholic Church. Both these cities, and many others in the region, have numerous churches and secular sites of interest to tourists.

Trentino-Alto Adige devotes about thirty thousand acres to grapevines, it ranks 16th among the 20 Italian regions. Its total annual wine production is about 25 million gallons, giving it a 14th place. About 55% of the wine production is red or ros?, leaving 45% for white. The region produces 8 DOC wines. DOC stands for Denominazione di Origine Controllata, which may be translated as Denomination of Controlled Origin, presumably a high-quality wine. A whopping 79.1% of Trentino-Alto Adige wine carries the DOC designation, by far the highest percentage in Italy. Trentino-Alto Adige is home to almost four dozen major and secondary grape varieties, about half white and half red.

Widely grown international white grape varieties include Gew?rtztraminer, Pinot Bianco, often called Pinot Blanc outside of Italy, Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, often called Pinot Gris outside of Italy, Sylvaner, and M?ller-Thurgau. In fact, some say Gew?rtztraminer originated in the Alto-Adige town of Termeno, known as Tramin in German. Italian white varieties include Nosiola, and Moscato Giallo, Trentino-Alto Adige’s version of the international Moscato (Muscat) grape.

Widely grown international red grape varieties include Pinot Nero, called Pinot Noir outside of Italy, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The best known strictly Italian red varieties are Schiava, Lagrein, Teroldego, and Marzemino.

Before reviewing the Trentino-Alto Adige wine and cheese that we were lucky enough to purchase at a local wine store and a local Italian food store, here are a few suggestions of what to eat with indigenous wines when touring this beautiful region.

Start with Ravioli della Val Pusteria, Rye Pasta with Spinach and Caraway Seeds. Then try Gulasch de Manzo, Beef, Potato, Onion, and Paprika Stew.

For dessert indulge yourself with Krapfen Tirolesi, Fried Pastry with Marmalade and Powdered Sugar. Did you notice that these specialties seem as Austrian as Italian?

OUR WINE REVIEW POLICY While we have communicated with well over a thousand Italian wine producers and merchants to help prepare these articles, our policy is clear. All wines that we taste and review are purchased at the full retail price.

Wine Reviewed

Concilio Pinot Nero Reserva 2002 12.5% alcohol about $15

I’ll start by quoting the marketing materials: “Pretty aromas of strawberry, pepper and earth lead to flavors that are soft and velvety. Good varietal characteristics demonstrated here in ths light-to-medium bodied, long finishing wine. Match to a grilled salmon or tuna.

And now for my thoughts. This wine has a cherry and tobacco nose and is mildly acidic. It tastes of tobacco. The wine is round, mouth-filling and somewhat robust. It is a bit older than most of the wines in this series, and frankly, it shows. Like many Pinot Noirs, it tasted of earth.

Once in a while I follow the producer’s suggestions. I felt this Pinot Noir was an excellent accompaniment to a grilled Atlantic salmon with steamed asparagus. The fish brought out the wine’s fruit flavors, and the wine did a great job of cutting the fish’s fattiness. I still remember the first time that I drank a Pinot Noir (Oregon, I believe) with salmon at the suggestion of a excellent fish restaurant. It’s a great combination when both the fish and the wine are high quality. I ended this meal with almond milk chocolate, washed down with a bit of wine. This latter combination is not classical, but the result was more than satisfactory.

My next tasting included beef stew and potatoes, zucchini and onions in a tomato sauce, and a commercially prepared moderately spicy “Turkish” salad based on red pepper, tomato, and onion. The wine was round, mouth-filling, a bit complex. The dominant taste was tobacco. But I was disappointed, the wine was short.

Asiago is a cheese whose characteristics differ widely depending on where it is made, and its aging. I happen to love a local Asiago that my neighborhood supermarket carries once in a while. It is relatively sharp. I am told that Wisconsin Asiago cheese typically has butterscotch undertones. The imported Asiago tasted with this wine was nutty and pleasantly acidic, but frankly not as good as the local version. The cheese brought out the earthy characteristics of the Pinot Noir. Interestingly enough, the wine immediately changed its flavor and became more acidic in the presence of a commercially prepared roasted butternut squash dip.

In a close call, my initial reaction was not to purchase this wine again. Then I changed my mind, I would purchase it again, but be quite careful in pairing the wine. There is a simple solution, serve it with a grilled, preferably Atlantic, salmon.

On my travels, I met a guy who had just built his own greenhouse. It had taken him two years! We got talking and I mentioned my Greenhouse web site. He could hardly wait for me to finish my sentence before launching into his tale:

“Building a greenhouse is one of the most frustrating projects that I have ever undertaken. I have been involved in doing home repair kinds of things for years, so I am no stranger to the difficulty of making everything fit together, but I swear, I will never build a greenhouse again. I had honestly thought that building a greenhouse would be just like building a shed. Just assemble the frame and install the walls and, bingo - all done. Boy was I mistaken. I had no problem when I made my shed, but the greenhouse was a real nightmare.

D.I.Y. Fundamentalism is a Form of Mentalism.

“I should have listened to my friends who said that I should hire an outside contractor instead of building a greenhouse myself, but I was sure that I was up to it. Let me tell you, it was one nightmare after another. Think installing windows is a pain in the neck? Try building a greenhouse, where every wall is made of absolutely nothing but windows and window frames! But that is not even the half of it. Oh no, not by a long shot.

“If you are building a garage or a shed, you have some leniency in terms of how things fit together. Sure, you assemble the basic frame as accurately and precisely as you can, but a millimeter here, half an inch there, and you’re still good. But it’s not the case if you are building a greenhouse. Not the case at all. Imagine assembling your whole frame and finding that your window frames don’t fit. Imagine trying to recut them,- an expensive waste of time and money that does nothing at all to fix the problem - and then having to dig out your foundations and start again. Imagine burning it down for the insurance and calling it a day. Such is the nightmare of building a greenhouse from scratch. Never again, my friend. Never again.

Plant Lovers Unite and Take Over.

“I had always thought that building a greenhouse was the ultimate project for a plant lover. It’s sort of like decorating the nursery for your kid. It’s the process of making a safe place for something that you love and treasure to glow and blossom. Now I realize the horrible truth. Building a greenhouse did just the opposite for me. It was six months before I could look at a plant!

“But now a year has gone by. I’ve begun to wander in and out of my greenhouse. After all the trials and tribulations, I have to admit that I now have something that I’d been wanting for a long time. It’s still standing, and it is no longer empty. Not by a long way.”

Telling his story put this guy in a much better mood, and we yabbered on long into the night. But I couldn’t help wondering if building a greenhouse could really be so difficult. I’d never even considered the possibility of designing and building one from scratch. There are simply too many good kits that are easy to buy off the shelf, take home, assemble and admire through the glass of a tart Chardonnay to worry about the whole D.I.Y.extremo thing.

Cheers.
